Speaking of birds, today I read that Don Merton, who has played an absolutely crucial role in the conservation of the kakapo and several other endangered bird, has passed away. I first read about the kakapo in the Douglas Adams/ Mark Carwardine book ‘Last Chance to See’ and was captivated by this hapless ground dwelling parrot and its story of survival. So much so that the kakapo is the cover star of my Go Wildlife comic. I’m sure Merton will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
